Brexit deal Kent analysis: The Prime Minister's plans are 'unravelling'

After announcing that she had her cabinet behind her, it seems Theresa May’s Brexit deal is unravelling against a backdrop of a steady stream of resignations.

The departure of Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab is a devastating blow and one that could be the trigger point for a leadership challenge.

So far, there is only one Kent MP putting their head above the parapet.

Theresa May

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke says he cannot back a deal that breaks the government’s manifesto pledge. In a series of tweets, he complained bitterly about a deal that would be the worst of all worlds.

If others share his view, they are keeping their counsel and waiting to see how the political wind is blowing.

But with resignations continuing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to see how the Prime Minister can hold on in the face of what has become a full-blown Brexit crisis.

Her options seem to be severely limited as time goes on. She called it a decisive moment yesterday and she was right - but perhaps not in the way she envisaged.

Rumours that MPs unhappy with her leadership are preparing to submit a letter to party whips calling for a leadership contest continue.

Her statement to MPs today represented an appeal for backing in the national interest - saying "the British people want us to get this done".

That is undoubtedly true. The issue is whether her own party believe she is the right person to act in that role.

Events in the last 24 hours are making it increasingly unlikely that she will be the one to steer the UK to the door marked Brexit.
