Welling have appointed former player Jamie Day as their new manager.

The 30-year-old (pictured) takes over from Andy Ford, who quit the post last month.

Day, who will be in charge for this Saturday's Blue Square South trip to Worcester, edged out former Ebbsfleet assistant boss Alan Kimble to land the post in what will be seen as a gamble by Welling owners Barrie and Barry Hobbins.

But general manager Barry Hobbins responded: "Every manager is a gamble. We'll only know in time if we've got this right.

"He is inexperienced, that is true, but he has his coaching qualifications up to UEFA A licence, and has been around the non-league scene.

"Jamie is young and enthusiastic, and has lots of contacts at all levels of the game that he can call on."

Day played 138 games and scored 18 goals for Welling between 2004 and 2007. He has also played for Dover and has left Dartford to join the club.

Mr Hobbins is confident that Day will receive the full backing of the club's supporters.

"Our fans have always supported our manager," he said. "I'm sure Jamie will get their full support.

"He was well liked here as a player and I'm sure he'll do well.

"Our supporters are a loyal bunch and hopefully they are as excited as we are about the appointment."
