Simon Willis says he will continue to give triallists their chance in the Second XI this season.

Two youngsters, Oxford University left-hander Ed Young and former Durham Academy batsman Andy Smith, have both scored hundreds this month.

Chris Murtagh (Surrey), Mark Nelson (Northants) and Mark Lawson (Yorkshire), all released by their counties, have also been included, while Young and Smith could get further chances to impress.

Willis said: "I watched Ed play for Oxford against Cambridge a fortnight ago and he performed well.

"We gave him an opportunity, and he played well against Gloucestershire in the one-day Trophy, scoring an unbeaten 125.

"Andy was recommended by former Sussex and Durham wicketkeeper Martin Speight, and played some games last season and impressed in the championship against Gloucestershire."

Meanwhile, Kent face Essex at Billericay on Monday in a new Second Xl one-day competition.
