The wife of a Kent golf boss extradited to the US for alleged arms dealing says she is heartbroken he has been denied bail.

A judge in El Paso, Texas, was told by prosecutors Christopher Tappin might be a danger to the community if he was released - and was a flight risk.

The 65-year-old, who lost his battle against being sent to America almost two weeks ago, faces up to 35 years in jail if he is convicted.

His wife Elaine Tappin says it is an "outrage" he has been refused bail.

Mr Tappin, president of the Kent Golf Society, denies any wrong-doing.

He lost his two-year battle against extradition following allegations he sold batteries for Iranian missiles, but he claims he is the victim of a sting by US agents.

Mr Tappin, from Orpington, was extradited under a treaty between the US and Britain, which means American prosecutors can demand a suspect is handed over without the evidence ever being tested in a British court.

South East MEP Nigel Farage has set up a petition for opponents of Mr Tappin's extradition to sign.

Mr Farage believes changes need to be made to the treaty - and said the British government needs to "stand up for its own people".
