Royal Wedding Street Party Weardale Avenue Dartford

Kent is hanging out the bunting this weekend as the county holds more than 300 parties to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee.

Thousands of people across the county will mark the landmark anniversary with neighbourhood knees-ups.

Kent has 319 official street parties with road closures, which is up 137 from the royal wedding last year.

There will be 38 street parties in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, 34 in Canterbury and at least 30 in Medway.

Bryan Sweetland, Kent County Council cabinet member for environment, highways and waste, said: "We made this process as simple as possible to make it easy for people to enjoy the event with their neighbours.

"We also waived the charges for street parties on quiet residential roads and cul-de-sacs."

Among the celebrations already held was an afternoon of high tea and Union Jack frosted cakes for around 30 people in Hernehill.

Theresa Bacon, a travel consultant, said: "In times like this, especially with everything going on at the moment, it’s just going to make everybody have a good party."
