Thunder and lightning hit Kent overnight

Thunder and lightning hit the county overnight.

After basking in the glorious sunshine and heat on Tuesday and Wednesday, the summer weather came to an abrupt end overnight as the storms rolled in.

According to lightningmaps.org, it hit in the English Channel near Folkestone and Dover and to the north of the county across Medway, Gravesend and the Isle of Sheppey.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning, which signals that the forecast is likely to have an impact on people's plans and travel arrangements, comes from 7pm yesterday.

It covered southern and eastern areas of England until 3am today.

On Tuesday the UK recorded its hottest day of 2022 so far, with 27.5C registered at Heathrow on Tuesday afternoon. The previous highest temperature was 23.6C in Faversham on May 6.

Sunshine and showers are forecast for the rest of this week with temperatures that could be a little above the average for May.
