Key witnesses sought after man killed by lorry in Deal

Key witnesses are being sought after a pensioner died when he was knocked down by a lorry in Deal.

The pedestrian, believed to be a 74-year-old from Deal, was hit by the truck as he crossed Victoria Road yesterday morning.

The man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now Kent Police are looking for five motorists who they think might be able to provide crucial information.

Officers have spoken to several witnesses, but still need to contact the drivers of vehicles that were spotted on CCTV as being behind the lorry as it was driven from Deal towards Walmer.

Officers also want to speak to the driver of another small red car, which was driven out of Marine Road just before the collision.

Insp Martin Stevens, from the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "These other drivers may be able to provide us with important information to help piece together what happened just prior to the collision.

"I should stress that these drivers are not, in any way, to blame and I would urge them to come forward."

Police were called to Victoria Road, at the junction with Marine Road, at about 11.40am.

Officers were at the scene, near Deal Castle, all afternoon and the road was shut in both directions.
