Schools and youngsters across the county are to get a new lesson in being safe online.

Kent Police and Kent County Council (KCC) have launched an e-safety DVD made by young people for young people and their peers.

The DVD is the first in a series created to provide advice and guidance on keeping children safe whilst using social networking sites.

Students who sit on the Kent and Medway Young Peoples Safety Forum created the idea of the DVD, which was funded by Kent Police and KCC.

It will be distributed among schools within Kent and Medway over the next few months, and libraries, teaching support groups and other partner agencies can obtain copies from KCC.

Assistant Chief Constable Allyn Thomas said: "Offering advice and guidance to children on how to stay safe online is sometimes met with resistance and maybe seen as adults 'telling them what to do'.

"Be safe - e-safe has been produced by children for children with the hope it will break that barrier and help to deliver the messages on how to stay safe on the internet."
