Lights out early and no TV for young offenders at Cookham Wood young offenders institution, Sir Evelyn Road, Rochester, Kent

Young offenders at Cookham Wood in Kent will be ordered to go to bed early under strict new rules.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has announced that 15 to 17 year-olds in five English institutions will have to be in their cells with lights out by 10.30pm from August.

Inspectors visited Cookham Wood Young Offenders Institution

Presently they are locked in their cells earlier, but have no time restrictions dictating when TVs are switched off.

Teenagers who refuse to obey the new rules will be penalised and lose privileges such as access to a television.
