David Balcombe looks set to be given the chance to play in Kent’s prestige 50-over game with India at Canterbury on Friday.

The 26-year-old loan signing from Hampshire is in line to replace all-rounder Azhar Mahmood (pictured), who looks likely to be rested.

Medium pacer Balcombe has impressed since joining the county in July taking 14 wickets in three championship games, but has been sidelined for the last couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.

Director of cricket Paul Farbrace explained: “I think Azhar will probably miss the India game and that Balcombe will play instead.

"It's partly rest and partly because he’s got a little niggle. We want him to play on Monday against Derby although he may not play against Essex next week in the championship game.

With skipper Rob Key still troubled by a wrist injury, new vice-captain Geraint Jones will again lead the side. Also included in the 12-man squad is youngster Sam Billings, who was 12th man for Tuesday’s 14-run Clydesdale Bank 40 win over Sussex Sharks at Hove.

A sell-out crowd of 7,000 is expected for the India game which starts at 2.30pm. Gates open at 12.30pm.
