A Gillinham man has been charged after a serious assault took place over the Easter weekend.

James Alexander Brown, 37, of Portland Road, Gillingham, was remanded in custody after he appeared before Medway Magistrates Court earlier today. He is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A woman who was also arrested in connection with the incident has been released on police bail until Friday, April 17.

Police were called to a flat in Sturdee Avenue, Gillingham, which is accessed via Fourth Avenue, at 3.15am on Sunday where they found a man with serious head injuries.

The area was quickly sealed off to allow forensic officers to gather evidence.

The victim was taken to Kings College Hospital in London where he remains in a critical condition.

Police believe the assault occurred during a confrontation after a group of people, who had been socialising in Gillingham town centre, had returned to a party in Sturdee Avenue.

• Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 01634 792177 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
