A man who was threatening to jump off Rochester Bridge yesterday was eventually talked down by police.

The incident happened at about 9.45pm and saw police request the help of the Medway coastguard as well as asking the Sheerness RNLI inshore lifeboat to launch.

Members of the coastguard supported police by standing on each side of the river bank in case the man jumped.

The lifeboat left Sheerness at its maximum speed, but was stood sown at shortly before 10.30pm, after police successfully coaxed the man down.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: “The lifeboat was stood down at 10.24pm, when it was confirmed the person was in the hands of the police.”
