Man dies after police arrest

An investigation is under way into the death of a man who fell ill at Bexleyheath police station.

The 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion on drink-driving in Vicarage Road, Bexley Village, at about 11.30pm last Friday.

He was taken to Bexleyheath police station, right, where he complained of feeling unwell at about 11.45pm.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital, but pronounced dead at about 12.40am.

A Met police spokesman said the man’s next of kin have been informed but that he has not yet been formally identified.

A post-mortem will be held and the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is investigating.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission spokesman confirmed it is also investigating the incident.
