Man faces trial over pensioner's death

VICTIM: Joan Smyth

A GILLINGHAM man is to face trial in November accused of killing an elderly pensioner.

Richard Loudwell, 58, denies murdering 82-year-old Joan Smyth on December 2 last year at her flat in Wakeley Road, Rainham.

Mr Loudwell, of Lower Twydall Lane, Gillingham, stood in the dock flanked by three prison officers and a dock officer when he appeared at Maidstone Crown Court.

November 3 has been fixed for the start of the trial which is expected to last for about four weeks. He will remain in custody.
