Man held on suspicion of rape

A MAN has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault on an 18-year-old woman in Rochester on Sunday evening.

Officers detained the man on suspicion of rape and assault at around 7.30pm last night.

The man, from the Sittingbourne area, is currently in custody at Medway Police Station and being interviewed by detectives.

The victim was walking in Rochester's Victoria Street when a man approached her. She has told police she was dragged into an underground storage area and sexually assaulted there.

Det Ch Insp Jon Sutton, who is leading the investigation, said: "Information that seems insignificant may help us with this investigation, so it is important for people to contact us."
