Man in fatal cliff fall is named

A 25-year-old man who fell to his death from a cliff at Newquay in Cornwall at the weekend has been named by police.

He was Richard Chapman who was initially thought to be from Erith, but came from Abbey Wood.

He is believed to have plunged to his death in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The alarm was raised at about 3.30am by a member of the public after Mr Chapman was seen in the Barrowfield area of Newquay, famous as the surfing capital of the UK.

Police and coastguards started a search of the area his body was found at the bottom of the cliffs.

Police are carrying out enquiries to establish how the tragedy happened but are not treating the incident as suspicious.
