A police raid on a Margate house found more than 100 cannabis plants growing in four rooms.

Halogen lighting had been rigged up and a hose trailed in from the garden to water the crop, Canterbury Crown Court heard.

Officers arrested a 38-year-old Vietnamese man, who was jailed for two years having admitted producing the class B drug on February 3 this year.

Denzil Pugh, prosecuting, said police found Van Nguyen in a small ground floor room being used as a bedroom.

The semi-detatched house at Ulster Road had been rented by a Vietnamese man and woman and Nguyen said he had been offered £1,000 to look after the plants for two weeks. He was taken to the address in a cab and was given the feed formula for the crop.

He said he didn't know they were cannabis plants or that cannabis was illegal in the UK but knew it was outlawed in Vietnam.

Phil Rowley, for Nguyen, said he had been smuggled into the UK last year at a cost of £20,000 to his family. He left behind his wife and four young children and elderly mother and his family would now be destitute.

Nguyen's intention was to send money home and maintained he didn't fully know what was happening. "He is at the very bottom of the chain," said Mr Rowley.

Jailing Nguyen, Judge Adele Williams gave him credit for his plea and accepted his role was that of a gardener for only a limited period.

She directed 75 days served on remand should count towards his sentence.
