A 50-year-old man has been killed and two 15-year-old girls injured in a collision on a country road.

Two cars - a black Vauxhall Astra and a black Nissan 200SX - were involved in the crash, which occurred at about 3.10pm Saturday in Upchat Road, Chattenden.

A fire pump from Cliffe and two from Medway helped police, along with military personnel from the nearby Chattenden Barracks.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free the man in the Nissan and he was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by ambulance, although the air ambulance was called to assist.

Police say the man died shortly after the collision.

The two 15-year-olds, who were passengers in the same car, were also taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 56-year-old man also from the Medway area, was taken to the same hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

Police closed the road at 3.30pm and reopened it at 8pm.

The man killed in the accident has not been named by police but they say he is from the Medway area.

Police have asked for anyone who saw the vehicles in the area prior to the incident, or witnessed the collision, to contact Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538.
