A YOUNG man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after his car hit a tree last night.

The 20-year-old was transfered to a neurology ward this morning with severe head, spinal and jaw injuries after the crash in Orpington.

Firefighters freed the man by cutting off the roof and doors of his Fiat Tempra after the incident in Sevonoaks Road at 8.30pm.

He was taken by air ambulance to King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill, but transfered to St George's Hospital, Tooting, this morning due to the nature of his injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident and will check the man's condition again at 8.45am tomorrow.
