Flags waving, whistles blowing, crazy costumes and loud music - it must be Margate Carnival time.

Excited crowds lined the route of the big parade on Sunday, and despite a few rain clouds hovering ominously, the sun battled its way through and everyone had a splendid time.

Marching bands played, competing with music from the many floats, and even a few vuvuzelas.

Visiting carnival courts came from all over Kent, including Dover, Sittingbourne, Minster and Herne Bay - with the Queens and Princesses all decked out in their gowns and finery.

The procession set off from the Royal Esplanade in Westbrook, and made its way along the seafront to the Eastern Esplanade in Cliftonville.

One of the biggest hits of the day were dancers from the world-famous Notting Hill carnival, who dazzled with fabulous costumes and lively dancing.

Children were thrilled to see giant vintage cartoon favourites Popeye and his long-suffering girlfriend Olive Oyl dancing along to the samba music.

During the weekend, the Piazza played host to a great line-up of music at the Soul Weekender - all part of the free fun on offer.

As the sun went down on Sunday, and the lights of the seafront funfair sparkled, the Mayor and Mayoress of Margate, Cllrs Mick and Shirley Tomlinson, invited carnival-goers and the visiting carnival courts and civic dignitaries to let their hair down at a dance in the Winter Gardens.

The end of a fun day - and the start of plans for next year's event.
