Manager Martin Allen has dismissed any suggestion his Gillingham team will be unable to sustain their impressive start to the season.

Gillingham have lost just one of their opening 12 League 2 games and sit three points clear at the top of the table.

Asked if he had any fears about the club slipping up, the Gills manager (pictured) replied bullishly: "Of course this team won’t slip up.

"They will keep winning, sometimes we might draw but we will just keep going and doing what we do.

"I love being top of the league and it puts a big smile on my face. Are we all going to go out and celebrate? No.

"This week the staff have been planning and preparing right through into the new year.

"We don’t ease off. Our players won’t ease off and they won’t get carried away.

"There are no big-timers and no flashy people – there is nobody above their station. If they did get above their station, Kedwell will sort them out."

Last weekend’s six-point gap at the top was halved as Port Vale won their Monday night game against Oxford. But Allen isn’t concerned about what others do.

"It’s kind of irrelevant because we can’t do any more than what we can do," he added. "We are only in control of our own destiny, of how many points we can get and how we play."
