Kent all-rounder Matt Coles has signed a new extended contract with the club until 2013.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a promising first full season with the county scoring 378 runs at 22.23, with a top score of 51. He took 27 wickets at 38.51 with a best of 4-55 in first-class matches.

Coles said he was pleased to have signed the extension and was looking forward to playing for Kent for at least the next three years.

"I have enjoyed my time with the club and wanted to show my commitment by signing this new deal,” he said.

Kent’s director of cricket Paul Farbrace described it as an excellent signing for the club.

"It shows that we are determined to hang onto our very best young players," he said.

"Matt made great strides last year and moved his game on nicely. He has shown a real desire to play for Kent and I think the supporters enjoyed seeing him give nothing less than 100 per cent in every match last summer.”

Chairman of Cricket Graham Johnson said Coles delivered more than was expected of him in his first year and demonstrated his huge potential.

He said: "We want to make sure he maximises this potential and that he enjoys his journey with us.

"He has the ability and approach that will endear him to Kent supporters, who can watch his development over the next three years and beyond.”
