THANET MP Stephen Ladyman is pushing for Ramsgate as a venue for sailing should London go ahead with a bid to stage the 2012 Olympics.

No decision has been made yet on whether the UK will try to land the the 2012 games, but Dr Ladyman believes Ramsgate could be a serious contender for the sailing.

He said: “We don’t know yet if a bid will be made by the British Olympic Association, but if one is made they must look hard at the potential of Ramsgate for sailing events.

“Ramsgate is an attractive venue, and a proven venue for world class sailing events. Hosting Olympic events would help regenerate the town and give Ramsgate marina the recognition it deserves.”

Ramsgate Week, co-ordinated by the Royal Temple Yacht Club, is one of the UK’s most successful Regattas, and the club also hosts championship yachting events.

The town is a popular venue on the Power Boat Grand Prix circuit and has become the regular home of the UK Grand Prix.

Dr Ladyman added: “These events have proved extremely popular with both competitors and spectators. The organisers have certainly demonstrated beyond doubt their ability to successfully organise such events.”

Dr Ladyman is campaigning for improved transport links and in particular for a better, faster rail connection.

He added: “The prospect of hosting Olympic events may just be the spur we need to stimulate these investments.”

No official bids have been made by Thanet to host the Olympic sailing events but Dr Ladyman has written to the Royal Temple Yacht Club, Thanet Council and the British Olympic Association asking them to investigate the idea.
