MP's embarrassment over football 'freebie'

DEREK WYATT: says he was unaware McDonald's had sponsored the event

SITTINGBOURNE and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt, an anti-obesity campaigner, joined 16 other Labour MPs on a Euro 2004 freebie, courtesy of burger giants McDonald's.

Their flights and hotel rooms were split between the fast food company and the Portuguese authorities with MPs making a small contribution to the cost.

But Mr Wyatt insists he did not know McDonald's had sponsored the event until he arrived at Heathrow.

Now he is checking to see how much the trip cost so he can repay the money and/or donate the money to a local charity.

One Sunday newspaper said the trip made a mockery of the Government crackdown on spiralling obesity among Britain's youngsters, especially when it came just days after MPs had called for the Football Association to drop McDonald's as a sponsor.
