MORE than three-quarters of Gillingham people who took part in a survey on the plan to build an airport at Cliffe have returned a resounding "no".

MP Paul Clark has now taken the results of his survey to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. The data had taken four months to gather.

"I was keen to ensure I had the widest possible consultation with my constituents on what is undoubtedly the biggest single issue we will have to decide collectively in our life times.

"I distributed over 9,000 bulletin sheets on the airport options, together with survey forms," he said.

The MP ran street stalls in Gillingham, Rainham, Parkwood and Twydall shopping centres, while shops and libraries took survey forms. Door-to door consultations also took place.

"We received in excess of 1,500 responses and 77 per cent of respondents were clear in their conclusion no to the airport," he said.

In a letter accompanying the survey, Mr Clark told Mr Blair: "I trust that this clear message from the people of Gillingham will weigh heavy in the ultimate decision-making process."
