A strange rumbling noise reported in part of Kent was linked to an incident at a power station Essex.

People living in Medway and Gravesend described it as sounding like a freight train.

It was originally reported on social media there had been an explosion at the former Coryton oil refinery which was decommissioned in 2012 but is also the location of a gas power station.

The noise was heard up to six miles away and caused a 'jet-like roaring sound'.

Judi Benavente posted on The Original ME Medway Postcode Group: "Ok, what's the loud rumbling noise in Chatham?

"It sounds like a freight train but has been going on for 10 minutes now. Sounds like is coming from the river direction."

Essex Fire service said they were called to the power station in Mannorway as a precaution following a build up of pressure which caused a safety valve to lift. A process which is described as 'completely normal'.

A statement went on to say: "The process has caused a large amount of steam and noise in the area, but there is no fire or cause for concern.

At 10.15pm firefighters said that on-site staff were dealing with the incident themselves and have already successfully reduced the pressure.

Crews are standing by as a precautionary measure."
