Name change from Ebbsfleet United to Gravesend & Northfleet not on agenda, says Peter Danzey

Ebbsfleet United secretary Peter Danzey has revealed there are no immediate plans to change the club’s name back to Gravesend & Northfleet.

Reports have suggested the Blue Square Bet South club are considering a name change after high speed rail operator Eurostar announced earlier this month they do not intend to extend their shirt sponsorship deal with the Stonebridge Road club beyond the end of this season.

However, Mr Danzey insists a name change is not on the club’s agenda and the concept was a tongue-in-cheek comment.

The club changed its name to Ebbsfleet United after agreeing a shirt sponsorship deal with Eurostar in May 2007, in a bid to promote the Ebbsfleet valley area and the newly-built Ebbsfleet international station, situated within a mile of the ground.

Mr Danzey said: "The name change was a tongue-in-cheek comment made after the Eurostar announcement and things have just spiralled from there.

"There are no plans on the agenda at the moment to change the club’s name. We are just focusing on the play-offs and finding out who we will be facing."

The name change almost four years ago has been suggested to have caused some sections of supporters to boycott the club but Mr Danzey is not convinced the faction of fans would return, if the club reverted back to Gravesend & Northfleet name.

Mr Danzey added: "People say that when we changed our name to Ebbsfleet United we lost supporters but I have my doubts because if you follow a club, then you follow a club."
