For 10 vital minutes, teacher Matt Pyrke battled to save his uncle’s life after he had a heart attack.

With help from a 999 operator, who talked him through emergency procedures, Matt fought to keep his uncle alive.

Stephen Edwards, 57, had just arrived at his sister’s home in Chatham when he collapsed after complaining of chest pains.

Matt, 31, a teacher at Rainham’s Howard School, started chest compressions on his uncle and carried on for 10 minutes until paramedics arrived. Matt has had no medical training.

Mr Edwards’ sister, Denise Pyrke, said: “I did not think miracles happen but I’m convinced this must be one.

“All the hospital staff said they could not believe he kept him going for so long.

“They said they can normally manage for three minutes but he must have just kept going because of the adrenaline.”
