JAMES Loudon has been installed as the new High Sheriff of Kent in a ceremony at County Hall. Mr Loudon takes over as High Sheriff - an office that dates back to Saxon times - from Tony Monteuuis.

The position has long been associated with the maintenance of law and order and the High Sheriff's main traditional duty now is to attend on High Court judges when they visit the county, and also to encourage organisations in Kent which help the community.

Mr Loudon, who is 61 and married with three children, spent most of his career with Blue Circle Industries plc where he was group finance director until 2001. He is now a non-executive director of several public companies.

He plans to spend a major part of his year in office visiting and encouraging organisations throughout the county that help children and young people in need.

Mr Loudon said: "I want to do all I can to encourage voluntary and other organisations in Kent in this field and to let them know how much their efforts are appreciated."
