A project will continue to support local artists after relocating to Chatham Maritime this weekend.

The NUCLEUS project supports about 100 designers, musicians, writers, illustrators and artists who used the temporary unit in Rochester High Street for the last three-and-a-half months.

There were fears the facility would have to close for good as new premises could not be found.

But on Saturday the new facility, based in the former Dickens World gift shop, Chatham Maritime will open its doors once again.

The NUCLEUS project came about when the New Art Centre, the arts and community base in Chatham High Street, was offered the opportunity to use the shop in Rochester while new tenants were sought.

A team of artist volunteers transformed the unit in a week, gutting, redecorating and stocking it. The base is staffed by volunteers.

Paula Groves, sculptor and head of NAC Arts Development said: “We were overjoyed when Dickens World offered us the chance to make use of their vacant shop unit, more so when we realised the potential for projects that explore Medway’s connection with Charles Dickens.

“We already have a woodcarver preparing to take up residence inside the attraction and many more artists who are preparing work inspired by the writer that can be sold or displayed inside the venue”

There are plans to host art workshops, performances and in-store activities involving the exhibiting artists but details are still to be finalised.

NUCLEUS opens at 10am on Saturday, March 14. Initially the shop will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-5.30pm and other times by appointment. Admittance is free.
