The new-look Elwick Square in Ashford is coming out of the dark as new lighting is installed.

The square in front of Debenhams is being created as part of the re-designed Elwick Road, which has adopted the concept of Shared Space, where traffic and pedestrians mix after barriers, signs and signals have been removed.

Lighting was installed on Wednesday designed by lighting artist Nayan Kulkarni, who also created lighting artwork on the QE2 bridge across the Tyne in Newscastle.

When complete, Bank Street, Elwick Road, West Street, and Forge Lane will all be lit with different coloured lights, which road bosses say will establish the character of the individual streets.

The Elwick Square lighting, which stands at over 30 ft tall (10 metres), has been paid for with government funding (DCLG), English Parnerships, Ashford Borough Council, Interreg and HST4i.
