New stores set to open in Strood

In a sorry state- the fomer Safeway supermarket in Strood

Work is under way on Strood High Street’s new Netto and Wilkinson stores.

The development at the former Safeway site was delayed after Medway Council refused permission for roller blinds to be installed at the front of the stores.

Developers wanted to upgrade security by installing the blinds, but planners felt it risked increasing anti-social behaviour in the area.

The plans have now been amended and contractors are on site transforming the building into the two new stores.

A Medway Council spokesman said: “This development is great news for Strood High Street.

“Medway Council wants to encourage the economic growth of Strood and these two stores play a major part in our plans.”

Safeway closed in 2005 and the building became a focal point for vandalism, and groups of youths loitering.

Businesses on the High Street which have also suffered from vandalism hope the refurbishment will help reduce the problems.

Ken Wilson, 69, owner of Priory Estate Agents, had his property defaced.

He said: “The empty site drags the town down.

“At the moment people are taking their business away from the High Street, so the development can only improve the trading circumstances.”

The stores are due to be opened before the end of the year.
