Nursery charged over baby's death

A nursery group has been charged with breaching health and safety laws after a baby choked to death at one of its centres.

Just Learning Ltd, which is now closed but used to have its head office in West Malling, is being prosecuted over the death of 10-month-old Georgia Hollick.

Georgia died in hospital in April 2006 after choking on an apple at one of the nursery's centres in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire.

An inquest later that year ruled it was accidental death.

But South Cambridgeshire District Council decided to bring the case under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 after what they say was a “lengthy health and safety investigation” into practices at the Cambourne nursery.

The case has been committed to Cambridge Crown Court on September 11.

As yet no plea has been entered by Just Learning Ltd.

A spokesman said: “The company intends to make its case in court later this year.

“Until then it is inappropriate to comment further.”
