Up to 30 police officers were called to a three-hour stand-off in Gillingham last night.

Officers - some in riot gear - were called to the scene in Dial Road, near The Strand leisure park, at 7.51pm following reports a man had breached his bail conditions.

Witnesses said Dial Road, Lower Woodlands Road and the Gads Hill dual carriageway were shut off as officers dealt with the problem.

A man was thought to be standing on a garage roof throwing tiles at police. He was talked down at about 11pm.

One witness said: "It seemed completely over-the-top and caused a lot of aggravation for the residents.

"Many of us were out in the road gossiping all night."

A police spokesman said a man was arrested following the incident.
