Average rents in Kent

Parts of Kent have been dubbed "very unaffordable" in a nationwide survey by charity Shelter.

The research looked at rents in boroughs throughout England, and compared them to the average local wage for that area.

London's boroughs topped the list - with a sliding scale in costs the further renters lived away from the capital.

Not surprisingly Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells topped the Kent league for average rents - with a three-bedroom pad costing an average of £1,150 in Sevenoaks and £1,104 in Tunbridge Wells.

Cheapest place to live for renters was Thanet, where a three-bedroom place would set you back just over half that - at £641 a month.

The figures, for the 12 months to June this year, show renters in more than half of local authorities in England shell out more than a third of their take-home pay in rent - a level said to be unaffordable.

In Kent, these include Ashford, Canterbury, Dartford and Gravesham and Maidstone.
