Ramsgate residents are set to trial an innovative way of keeping seagulls at bay by wrapping rubbish bags in 'peck-proof' packaging.

The reusuable sacks will be tested by more than 200 households in the Eastcliff area, including properties in Augusta Road, Augusta Place, Truro Road, Artillery Road, Arklow Square, Shaftsbury Street and Balmoral Place.

It is hoped the new waterproof waste bags, made from strong polypropylene and secured with a Velcro fastening, would stop litter being strewn across roads and pavements by feathered scavengers.

Residents will be asked to place their waste inside regular black refuse bags, tied at the top and put inside the anti-seagull sack. They would be told waste must not be put in loose or left outside the extra container.

A report sent to councillors added: "Residents should secure the bag to a fixed point such as a railing outside their property using the cord provided or put a brick or similarly weighty object in the bottom to ensure that it does not blow away.

"After the refuse has been collected, the bags should be taken back onto their property at the earliest opportunity and not be left out on the pavement any longer than is necessary."

One sack would be provided to every property taking part in the pilot project, while households with four or more residents would be able to request an additional bag. A replacement sack would be provided free of charge every 12 months, with extra bags charged at £4.50.

The scheme would initially cost an estimated £3,500 and could start as early as February next year.
