AN ELDERLY motorist had part of his car impaled in his back after crashing as he drove the wrong way down the M20.

Dougie Gillham, 79, of The Churchlands, New Romney, had been to the William Harvey Hospital on Sunday evening because he was feeling unwell. As he left the hospital he drove down the coastbound carriageway of the motorway near junction 10.

His white Peugeot 205 collided with another vehicle and Mr Gillham was left with an 18-inch piece of the car’s interior trim lodged in his back.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 9.50pm and firefighters from Folkestone and Wye had to cut the side off his car to allow paramedics to treat him.

Mr Gillham was taken to the William Harvey with suspected head and spinal injuries and a badly broken right arm.

He was transferred to Guy’s Hospital, London, on Monday where he had an operation to remove the steel from his body, which had missed his vital organs.

Mr Gillham’s family did not want to comment but said he remains in a serious condition.
