An 82-year-old woman was treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire in Canterbury on Saturday morning.

The blaze in a two-storey building in St Michael's Close in the Rough Common area of the city started at around 5.40am.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had started in a ground floor living room.

The elderly casualty was treated by paramedics at the scene and was the only person to require medical attention.

The fire caused a small amount of damage to the property but watch manager Mark Jones said it could have been far worse had the house not been fitted with the smoke detector.
