Police 'nuisance crime' team here to stay

Members of the team described as having a "can-do attitude"

A PILOT police patrol set up to tackle nuisance crime in Chatham High Street has been made a permanent fixture.

When the initiative started last November, its main aim was to monitor and police the alcohol control zone.

But the team has also dealt with arrests for crimes such as attempted murder, GBH and drugs possession. It has recently been cracking down on motorists ignoring no-entry signs and other traffic-related offences.

Team leader, Sgt Nikki Lee, said: “I am confident our efforts in the area have improved the High Street.”

The team is overseen by neighbourhood inspector for central Medway, Mat Newton, who said: “I am delighted the team is now permanent. Their can-do attitude and enthusiasm for their job has helped to improve the environment.”
