Police pelted with missiles at travellers' site

POLICE had to call for back-up after stones were hurled at them at a travellers' site.

Two officers and their car were pelted with the missiles on Tuesday at the Chilmington site at Great Chart, near Ashford.

Extra police were called to find the attackers and one man was arrested.

A South Kent Police spokesman confirmed: "Police were confronted with stones being thrown at them and extra officers were called in to deal with it."

The incident happened at about 9.50am when the two officers initially went to the site to make inquiries about a stolen vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

The man arrested for obstructing a police officer was a 55-year-old from Faversham who was formally cautioned.
