MEDWAY Police are due to unveil plans today for a new multi-million pound station at Chatham Maritime. The forces' 500-strong staff will relocate from their town centre offices to the massive purpose-built building.

Stations at Chatham and Rainham have already been sold for a total of £2m which will be ploughed back into the venture. Satellite offices will be created to maintain a police presence in the towns and it is believed the move will provide resources for more bobbies on the beat.

After two years of negotiations a deal has been clinched with SEEDA and approved by Chatham Maritime Trust Board to buy the four-acre plot of land. Other sites considered were Gillingham Business Park, Buckmore Park, Chatham and Strood riverside.

The project is being funded by private investment and three shortlisted bidders will be approached at formal meeting at police headquarters today. Work due to start in next year is expected to be completed in 15 months.
