Police revealed today the massive blaze that ripped through a DIY store at the weekend may be linked to another arson and an attempted arson.

Officers from Kent Police's major crime department are now investigating all three incidents over the Bank Holiday to work out if the same person is responsible.

On Saturday, 80 firefighters tackled the blaze at Homebase at the Quarry Wood industrial estate in Aylesford.

Fire officers remained at the scene until Monday.

But until now Kent Police's forensics officers haven't been able to get into the building because it's so unsafe.

Investigators will try to get in and carry out a finger-tip search for clues later today.

Around an hour after that fire sparked, staff at a B&Q store in Larkfield put out a fire in the lighting section.

Then on Monday staff at another B&Q store in Maidstone found the preparation of a fire in a wood aisle of the store.

A fire had not been started and staff reported the incident to police.

Kent Police's Det Supt Mick Judge, Head of Major and Serious Crime, has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "We would like to hear from anyone who was at any of these stores who may have seen anything suspicious, around the time of the three incidents, over the Bank Holiday weekend.

"Please contact the incident room with any information you may have as it may be prove vital to our investigation.

"Members of staff should be commended for their swift actions in evacuating the Homebase store.

"Had this not been the case, the outcome could have been very different.

"The fire has caused extensive damage but thankfully no-one has been hurt."

Det Supt Judge added: "We have arrested and charged one man in connection with the incident in the B&Q store in Maidstone, however it is important that anyone with any information contact us immediately as our investigations are continuing."

Benny Dighton, aged 27, of no fixed address, was charged with attempted arson with intent to endanger life and one offence of burglary at a school in Maidstone.

He appeared before magistrates in Maidstone today and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
