ALMOST 200 homes in the village of Chartham Hatch, near Canterbury, were left without electricity for 11 hours during a power cut.

Bizarrely there was just enough power to some homes to make a bulb glow dimly but left all other electrical items useless.

The entire village was plunged into darkness for the last two hours as engineers fought to restore power.

One villager, Frank Hughes, said: "It went off at 11am on Saturday and seemed to effect one in every three houses right through until 7.30pm.

"But it was strange. There seemed to be enough power just to make a bulb glow dimly. Then from 7.30pm the power went off completely across the village."

Electricity supplier EDF Energy insisted there wasn't any delay in getting the power back on after an overhead power line was damaged.

An EDF spokesman said: "Our control centre received calls from customers reporting either flickering power supplies or no power from shortly after 11am. All power was restored by 9.45pm."
