Five low-risk offenders from a Sheppey prison cleared three–quarters of a tonne of rubbish from a service station on the A2.

They were from Standford Hill open prison at Eastchurch and they were at The Gate Services near Faversham with a supervisor as part of Active Citizenship Together (ACT) Swale.

This is a scheme that sees the borough Community Safety Partnership work together with the prison service.

The team cleared the service area of bottles, cans, paper and other general rubbish and they also managed to clear part of a public footpath nearby.

Anne Ryman, Swale Borough Council’s environmental projects officer, said: “The work these offenders have done has completely transformed the area. The litter found along the slip roads onto the A2 was a real eyesore and now that’s been cleared it’s greatly improved the visual impact of the area.”
