Deputy Chief Constable Alan Pughsley 'preferred candidate' for chief constable role, Ann Barnes reveals.

The second in command of Kent's police force is set to take over the number one uniformed role... as Chief Constable of Kent.

Ann Barnes, Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, today announced Alan Pughsley as the preferred candidate for the role.

That choice awaits confirmation from the police and crime panel on Friday, December 20.

The expected appointment follows a two-day selection process which included Mrs Barnes, senior police representatives and Michael Bax, a former High Sheriff and local businessman.

Mr Pughsley was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in March 2011.

He joined Kent Police in April 2009 as Assistant Chief Constable for Specialist Operations, heading up the joint Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

Before this, he had worked at the Metropolitan Police since 1984.

His expertise was in murder investigations, armed robbery, firearms and drug-related crimes.

Mr Pughsley also worked with Surrey Police as a Detective Superintendent before returning to the Metropolitan Police as a Borough Commander in Lewisham, South London.

There, he was responsible for 640 police officers and 180 police staff.
