Like a phoenix, Ramsgate Carnival returned in bright, fresh and colourful form for its 2010 revival.

The success of Sunday's event (July 25), delighted the hardworking carnival committee and supporters who had invested tremendous effort, time and money to bring back a much-loved community fixture after the carnival's absence in 2009.

The brilliance of the carnival and sheer graft involved in its return was matched by the wholehearted support of onlookers who lined the route in great numbers, particularly along the seafront.

A Kent Fire and Rescue pump led the parade as is the tradition and was well-placed to make a quick get away when it received an emergency call.

Close behind were Ramsgate Mayor Cllr David Green, heading 40 vibrant and colourful floats including carnival courts from around Kent, town groups and two bands.

Cllr Green said: "It was a tremendous day and although we were really determined to bring the carnival back, it was even more successful than we could have hoped."

He said one of Dover's two carnival courts deserved a special mention because they walked the entire route due to the unexpected loss of their transport.

Lack of funds and committee members had led to the cancellation of Ramsgate carnival last year. It was made possible again with the help of a £3,000 grant from Ramsgate Town Council and an injection of commitment by a new committee headed by chairman Ann East.
