Robbers are believed to have escaped with thousands of pounds in a Bentley after they struck at a Ramsgate bank last night.

Two men made off in the luxury car after robbing security men delivering cash to the Halifax.

Weapons were not used in the robbery outside the bank at the junction of King Street and Queen Street, but one of the security guards suffered a suspected broken finger after he fell.

The robbers, described by police as black and not wearing any coverings over their faces, used a sledgehammer to smash a glass door while the delivery was being made to the Halifax at around 8pm.

Police say two cartridge boxes of cash were taken.

The total amount has not been confirmed, but it is believed to be thousands of pounds.

The robbers escaped up the High Street in the Bentley.

Details of the number plate were taken by a witness, but it does not match the vehicle.

Detectives are particularly appealing to anyone who operates hotels or bed and breakfasts in the area, as it is believed the two men may have stayed nearby overnight.

• Anyone with any information is asked to contact CID at Margate Police Station on 01843 231055 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. You may be eligible for a reward.
