Rochester and Strood MP Mark Reckless rebels in student vote

Rochester and Strood's MP has defied the government in the crucial vote on tuition fees

Mark Reckless voted against the proposals, while Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch abstained.

Miss Crouch said: "I have, after much consideration and discussion with ministers, decided not to vote for the government's proposals to treble tuition fees."

Sir John Stanley, Tonbridge and Malling MP, said: "I have been concerned that there are proper measures and protection for families on modest incomes.

"I attach the utmost importance to that and the government has taken some sensible steps to ensure access to a university education remains open to all."

Students from Kent and Medway joined protests across the country over plans that could see some students paying up to £9,000 in yearly fees.
