POSTAL workers look set to strike next month as their dispute with Royal Mail continues.

Members of the Communication and Workers Union (CWU) are planning two 48-hour walk outs starting on October 5 and 9.

Picket lines will be set up at distribution centres and offices in Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham and Rochester.

This latest action comes after several rounds of 24-hour strikes in August brought Royal Mail to a standstill.

Dave Banbury, secretary of the Kent Invicta branch of the CWU, said: “In a deterioration of our relationship Royal Mail is now introducing executive changes without consulting staff.

“This strike is not just about pay and pensions. If Royal Mail attacks the rights of staff then they attack the quality of service for our customers.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “The union’s repeated refusal to contemplate changes shows they are completely out of touch with UK industry and the reality of how competitive markets work.”

There are concerns that these extended strikes will affect local businesses.

Bob Russell, chairman of the North Kent Chamber of Commerce, said: “It will be jolly inconvenient, particularly for small businesses who rely on a regular postal service to receive money and cheques. It could cause them reduced cash flow.”
