A late surge has meant 180 Kent streets will be hanging out the bunting and laying out the teacakes on royal wedding day.

Kent County Council has approved the street parties to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The numbers soared at the last minute after the council waived its charges for parties in quiet streets and simplified the application process.

By the middle of last month just 54 applications had been made for official parties - but Kent still topped the national league for local events.

John Burr, director of Kent Highways, said: "This is a very special occasion and we wanted to make it easy for our residents to enjoy the royal couple's big day.

"We are pleased that so many people will be able to join in the national celebrations."

How will you be celebrating the big day? Tell us in the comment box below.
